3D Mammography (Digital Breast Tomosynthesis)

At Credit Valley Diagnostic Centre, we believe it's time to improve the entire mammography experience, and that means being the first  clinic in Ontario to offer GE's innovative Pristina 3D Mammography (DBT) to our diagnostic patients. The technology and design of the Senographe Pristina assists us by easing patients' anxieties, making technologists' jobs easier, and helping radiologists diagnose with confidence. This new 3D Mammogram platform puts everyone in a better position for effective care.

What is 3D Mammography (Digital Breast Tomosynthesis)?

3D Mammography, or Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), is amongst the latest imaging technology in mammography.

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, also called 3D mammography, or DBT, produces a three dimensional image of the breast and can improve the detection of abnormalities - particularly in patients with dense breasts. In comparison, conventional 2D mammography produces a single, flattened image of the breast, which can sometimes make it difficult for doctors to detect certain abnormalities due to overlapping tissue. Digital Breast Tomosynthesis minimizes the impact of overlapping breast tissue during imaging as the tube captures multiple images while moving over the breast in an arc-like fashion. These images are then combined by software to create a three-dimensional rendering of the entire breast, allowing the radiologist a layer-by-layer look at the area in question.

How is 3D Mammography Performed, and is it safe?

3D Mammography is technically performed no different than your conventional 2D screening mammogram. There is no extra preparation required, and the exam is as quick (no more than a few seconds of compression) and convenient as your standard mammogram. GE's Senographe Pristina is safe, effective, and offers the same level of radiation as your standard 2D exam - which is the lowest dose amongst all mammography equipment manufacturers.

Who is 3D Mammography For?

This tool is beneficial for everyone due to the in-depth look it provides our Breast Radiologists. This is especially true for patients who have dense breasts, as Digital Breast Tomosynthesis allows for increased detection in abnormalities that could otherwise be obscured by tissue overlap. Presently, at Credit Valley Diagnostic Centre, we are using this technology as a diagnostic tool, and offering 3D Mammography to all of our diagnostic and recall patients.
